Offense:
The good news is the Bulldogs are returning their QB from a year ago. Evan Bullock is back to lead the offense after a solid showing last season, starting 9 games and a TD:INT ratio of 14:3. The bad news is Bullock was one of the most pressured and sacked QBs in the entire country last season. This year, the o-line returns two starters and a few transfers and must make improvement for this offense to have any chance. Outside of that, the offense shows promise. The backfield has depth and good skill and the wide receiver and tight end room has enough playmakers to give Bullock a chance to improve upon his numbers from last season.
Defense:
The 2024 Bulldogs defense was one of the best in the conference in pretty much every category. Unfortunately, with success comes loss as a good chunk of its production from last season entered the transfer portal. The exception is LB Kolbe Field, who was second on the team in tackles and a leader for the defense. He will be joined by fellow LB Sifa Leota, who saw action last year as a rotational piece. The secondary should be in a decent place. Returning starters Cedric Woods and Jacob Fields have all league potential.
Analysis:
The Bulldogs made a bowl game last year, albeit somewhat undeservingly, after Marshall was forced to opt out. However, that doesn’t change the current feel around the program and around HC Sonny Crumbie. The Bulldogs haven’t had a winning season in the last 5 seasons, but with a favorable schedule and some good returning pieces on both sides of the ball, this could be their chance to at least become bowl eligible. If not, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a new leader in Ruston in 2026.
