Huntingdon College Football Player Killed in a Car Crash

An Alabama community is grieving the tragic loss of a promising college football player killed in a head-on crash last week.
James E. Owens Jr., a 20-year-old defensive lineman at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, died early Monday, Nov. 10, when his vehicle collided with a pickup truck in Chilton County, authorities said.
The crash occurred around 5:35 a.m. on U.S. 82, roughly two miles west of Maplesville, and claimed the lives of both drivers. Owens was driving a 2019 Chevrolet Camaro when it struck a 2016 Toyota Tundra driven by 42-year-old Justin E. Carlee, who also died at the scene.
In the days since the accident, Owens’ coaches and teammates have spoken out about the loss of a young man saying In the days before his death, Owens was baptized. A junior from Tuscaloosa, Owens appeared in five games this season, recording 10 tackles.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division is continuing to investigate the crash.
