VIDEO: Former NFL Player Seeks $2 Million After Being Held at Gunpoint by Police at Airport
Former NFL linebacker Wesley Leasy and his daughter are seeking $2 million in damages after being mistakenly detained at gunpoint by police at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in April.
Leasy, who played for the Arizona Cardinals in 1995 and 1996, filed two notices of claim for $1 million each against the cities of Mesa and Phoenix, their respective police departments, the Phoenix Aviation Department, and the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
The claims state that on April 10, police drew their weapons and handcuffed Leasy and his 26-year-old daughter as he was picking her up from the airport. Authorities allegedly mistook Leasy’s white Mercedes for a vehicle connected to a nearby shooting.
Body camera footage cited in the lawsuit reportedly shows officers detaining both individuals before realizing they did not match the suspect’s description. The actual suspect, a 19-year-old white male, was arrested several days later.
Leasy and his daughter are now pursuing legal action, alleging emotional distress and trauma resulting from the incident.
