Pittmans Pocket: HBCU True Freshman of the Week

Week 1 of college football gave us our first glimpse at some of the brightest young HBCU talent stepping onto the field for the first time. Several true freshmen wasted no time making an impact, but one performance stood above the rest.

Freshman of the Week

Devaughn Slaughter – WR – Tennessee State

The Tigers may have found their next star wideout in Devaughn Slaughter. In his college debut against North Carolina A&T, the 6’1, 185-pound former 3-star recruit erupted for 4 receptions, 102 yards, and a touchdown. His speed, crisp routes, and ability to stretch the field gave Tennessee State’s offense a dynamic threat and showed why head coach Reggie Barlow will lean on him early in his tenure.

Slaughter’s breakout performance earns him the honor of Pittman’s Pocket HBCU True Freshman of the Week for Week 0.

Honorable Mentions

Azayvonne Stribling – DB – Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Facing a tough Texas Tech offense, Stribling stepped up in a big way with 6 tackles in his debut. The former 3-star prospect proved he can hang with elite competition and looks poised to be a cornerstone for the Golden Lions’ secondary.

Kaden Dixon – RB – Alabama A&M
Dixon made the most of his opportunities against Arkansas, carrying the ball 5 times for 37 yards, averaging an impressive 7.4 yards per carry. His burst and field vision provided a spark for the Bulldogs’ rushing attack.

Jarvis Davis – WR – Alabama A&M
Though his numbers were modest, Davis showcased speed and playmaking ability against the Razorbacks. His smooth route running and ability to create separation point to a bright future in the Bulldogs’ receiving corps.

Closing

From explosive playmakers to defensive anchors, Week 0 showed that the future is bright across HBCU football. Devaughn Slaughter takes home the top honor, but names like Stribling, Dixon, and Davis are already proving that this freshman class is one to watch.
