It’s hard to believe the 2024 college football season is already underway, and two HBCU matchups took center stage in the opening week.

FAMU had their hands full this past weekend with Coach Odums and the Norfolk State Spartans. FAMU’s Daniel Richardson was impressive, completing 22 of 30 passes for 286 yards and three touchdowns, including a 55-yard bomb to Jamari Gassett. Norfolk State’s Jalen Daniels also had a solid debut, going 7 for 9 with 142 yards in his first collegiate game since transferring from Garden City Community College.

In the end, FAMU’s defense stepped up when it mattered most, with Kendall Boller and James Ash making key plays to secure a narrow 24-23 victory over the Spartans.

Another exciting game was Hawaii vs. Delaware State. The Hornets had the Warriors on edge in the first half, going into the locker room tied 14-14. But Hawaii came alive in the second half. Quarterback Brayden Schager kept the momentum going, completing 17 of 34 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns, while adding some crucial runs that kept the pressure on Delaware State. On defense, Sauce Williams and Jamih Otis delivered standout performances for the Warriors.

Delaware State didn’t go down without a fight. Sophomore quarterback Marqui Adams showed promise, completing 17 of 28 passes for 156 yards and making some notable runs that highlight his bright future. Adams even broke through for a score after an impressive one-on-one open-field tackle. Jaden Sutton also performed well, rushing for 56 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, averaging 4.7 yards per carry against an FBS opponent—a solid showing. Barry Wagner, #11, held his own with four tackles, a pass breakup, and nearly snagging an interception.

Hawaii ultimately defeated Delaware State 35-14. It will be interesting to see how the Hornets bounce back in MEAC play in Week 2.
