Why Indianapolis Colts starting Daniel Jones over Anthony Richardson could be good for Richardson development

Written by Karver Jordan

On Tuesday morning it was announced that Daniel Jones was starting over the young project quarterback Anthony Richardson, it gained buzz instantly. Richardson has all the traits and qualities to be a successful quarterback in the National Football League. Richardson has major accuracy issues, arguably his biggest weakness over his career he has recorded 176 completions out of his 348 passes with a completion percent of 50.6%, below average. However, he is decent as a rusher, something you need in the NFL — 111 Carries over his career for 635 yards with 10 touchdowns. When Richardson was drafted people referred to him as a project and someone who has the ability to be a very successful player if given the right team and coaching. Now let’s get into the reasons of why this could be good for Richardson:

  1. Gives Richardson some time to work on accuracy

A career compilation percentage of 50.6% is not great, and will need to be worked on during practice. He may need to change up his mechanics, you don’t always need to throw it as fast as you can – Richardson has struggled with different levels of speed on his passes. However, the deep ball is his strong suit. Some starters in the NFL can not make these passes:

If you can help Richardson with his accuracy and ball speed, you can have an average quarterback in the young quarterback. This is where he needs work the most.

  1. Richardson decision making

Richardson has struggled with reading defenses, learning behind Daniel Jones could give him some pointers. Richardson should be sitting next to Daniel Jones picking his brain every chance he gets, learning a lot from Jones could be good for Richardson. Jones did learn a little bit in Minnesota last season under Kevin O’Connell, maybe some of Kevin O’Connell’s teachings has moved into the Daniel Jones game.

Richardson has all the traits, just needs time. Either that’s in Indy or elsewhere, he can make a difference with time.
