Should the Giants select Shedeur Sanders if he is sitting there at Three?

NFL Draft Order: As of Right Now the Giants have the First Pick in the NFL Draft
Should the Giants select Shedeur Sanders if he is sitting there at Three?

The New York Giants made a splash when they signed Russell Wilson a few days ago and officially removed themselves from the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes. It sounds almost like a prayer by Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll.

The New York Giants hold the third pick in the NFL Draft, and they have to figure out how not to mess this up. If the Giants cannot get this going everyone is getting fired. The Giants signed Russell Wilson, but also signed Jameis Winston the week before. The Giants currently have three quarterbacks on their active roster. They have Wilson, Winston and Tommy DeVito, but do they have room to draft another quarterback?

If the New York Giants were to select a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft over a star like Travis Hunter, it would likely be driven by a combination of strategic, long-term team-building factors, but I would question the move big time.

While the quarterback position is often considered the most important in the NFL, the Giants better be sure that Shedeur is the future. The Giants cannot risk another Daniel Jones like draft pick. The Giants made a huge mistake by signing Jones long term over Saquon Barkley and that bit them in the butt.

The Giants have had several years of inconsistency at the quarterback position, and selecting a young, talented QB in the draft could be viewed as the best option for bringing stability to the position for the long term, but adding a player like Travis Hunter who is considered the best player in the draft would make way more sense. They could team him up with Wandale Robinson and Malik Nabers to have him play both offense and defense. Why not? The Giants are in a win now mode, and Hunter has been able to play both sides in college.

I think adding a guy who can play both sides of the ball is way more valuable than adding another quarterback.

Hitting an elite quarterback is incredibly rare, and teams typically prioritize selecting them when they have a chance to land one. In this year’s draft class none of them are truly considered a generational talent. Several feel Cam Ward is better than Shedeur and if the Giants feel the same way, why would you take the 2nd best quarterback over the best player in the entire draft?

Travis Hunter is a fantastic player who can excel both as a wide receiver and a cornerback, offering incredible versatility. However, while Hunter could be an immediate game-changer and provide major upside on both sides of the ball, the Giants’ need for a quarterback is still a long-term problem.

As a defensive back and receiver, Hunter’s impact is valuable, but a quarterback drives the offense long term. Both Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson were signed to one-year deals. That means the Giants are looking at them as a stop gap option. Hunter would be a generational talent, but not at the quarterback position. Could adding Hunter prolong the length of employment of both Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll? I would like to think yes, but it would depend on how well the Giants play this year with Wilson or Winston at the helm.

The Giants have a tough decision to make, and they cannot miss. They really have to hit on this pick, and it is not an easy decision.

Ultimately, while Travis Hunter is a spectacular, multi-faceted talent, the Giants will likely prioritize drafting a quarterback over any other position if they feel they’re in need of a future signal-caller. A great quarterback can change the entire trajectory of the franchise, and the Giants may see this draft as their chance to finally lock down a long-term solution at the most important position in the game, but they better get it right.
