Could The Bills Swing Big For Metcalf?

As the NFL’s new league year begins on March 12th, many players have been given permission to seek a trade and DK Metcalf is the newest addition to the long list of players teams are willing to move. As a team desperate for star level playmakers could the Buffalo Bills make the big swing to take their offense to a higher level and how would this move affect their draft day selections?
Metcalf, a 2019 second round pick, has been a mainstay in Seattle becoming their most consistent receiver. In 2024 Metcalf had a blazing start to the season posting three games of 100+ yards in the teams first four games leading to a 3-1 record. Soon after the team struggled losing four of their next 5 games, Metcalf’s role seemed to have shifted during this time. Seattle’s former offensive coordinator, Ryan Grubb led an offense that catered to the rise of Jaxson Smith Njigba and Mecalf finished the season with not having a single 100 yard game after week four.
Rumblings of Metcalf’s future in Seattle were heard through the league in recent weeks citing his eagerness for a new contract as he entered the final year of his three year extension that paid him seventy-two million dollars. The two teams linked to Metcalf prior to his trade request have been The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills, It has been known for weeks the Bills have been searching the market for a big name talent. During the season Bills GM Brandon Beane acquired Amari Cooper in a trade with the Browns in an effort to give Josh Allen a number one target in a receiver room full of questions. The Cooper trade did not bear the fruit that the team expected as Cooper had a disappointing end to the season. In recent weeks Beane has said he believes that having the ability to stretch the field vertically and horizontally will help the Bills get to the next level. Metcalf is truly one the leagues better field stretchers as all 5 of his touchdowns came in with at least twenty plus air yards.
Teams knowing Metcalf is seeking a new multi year deal that may eclipse thirty million dollars a year Metcalf’s trade value is currently in flux. Seattle is setting the price at a 1st and 3rd round pick in the 2025 NFL draft according to Dianna Russini, I do believe a first round pick is a bit rich for Beane’s blood especially with a contract agreement necessary to fit Metcalf into the team’s cap. With that being said a deal structured around one of the two second round picks the Bills own plus a fourth rounder should be enough to entice the Seahawks to part ways with Metcalf.
With the mock trade done the first two rounds in the 2025 NFL Draft the Bills have 2 picks. With those 2 picks I could see them load up strictly on defense as most of their record setting offense is set to return with the possible addition of Mecalf.
In the first round at pick #30 I believe the Bills could select Michigan’s Kenneth Grant, a player that fits exactly what the bills need: a 6’4 330 pound defensive tackle. Grant’s main focus on the field is to disrupt the natural flow of the run game with his ability to control the interior with his wide frame and plug up run gaps. He does have underrated juice as a pass rusher, in his final season racking up with 3 sacks and 27 pressures. It is easy to project with a high floor player like Grant as a run defender that he could grow into a player that can consistently pass rush at the next level and could help collapse the pocket from the inside. The Bills have searched for years for a running mate for former 1st round pick Ed Oliver, Oliver is known for his ability to put pressure on opposing QBs but his run defense has left more to be desired. Adding Grant would give Buffalo more stability in the middle and could clear the way for their linebacking core to make more plays.

At pick 56 I believe the Bills could select Notre Dame’s Xavier Watts. Throughout last season the Bills got a solid season out of Damar Hamlin and with his pending free agency I doubt the Bills would be overly eager to keep him if he has a competitive market. This is where Xavier Watts comes in he is exactly what head coach sean mcdermott wants a true eraser in the backend of his defense he twitchy and anticipates the best in this class he may be not the athletic freak at his position but he is the strongest in coverage. One could see this as a possible micah hyde-esque player who commands the deep parts of the field.

With Metcalf on board and rookies that could be selected the Bills should be expected to be atop the AFC again and compete for a championship, it is up to GM Brandon Beane to find a logical pathway.
