Broncos Fans Catch a Glimpse of Potential Future in Bo Nix’s Preseason Debut

Denver Broncos fans finally got a taste of what could be their future franchise quarterback as Bo Nix made his preseason debut in a thrilling 34-30 win over the Colts on Sunday.

Nix, selected 12th overall in April’s NFL Draft, didn’t disappoint. He completed 15 of 21 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown, averaging six yards per completion.

The 2023 PAC-12 Offensive Player of the Year, Nix came into the game in the first quarter, showcasing the same skills that made him a standout at Oregon, where he threw 45 touchdowns against just three interceptions in his final college season.

Nix also displayed his athleticism, showing why he was one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in college football. He scrambled out of the pocket several times, including for a first down, building on his impressive 5.7 yards per carry average in 2022, which ranked second in the PAC-12.

“When plays break down, it’s big to be able to extend them,” Nix said. “It’s beneficial for the offense, and you never know when you’ll need it, so it’s always good to train for those moments.”

Nix’s lone touchdown pass was a well-executed completion to Marvin Mims Jr., capping off a long drive.

“It was a good day,” the rookie reflected. “We ran the ball efficiently, made some good plays in the passing game, converted key third downs, and got points when we needed to. It was a huge team win.”

This performance is sure to give Broncos fans some hope after a long quarterback drought since Peyton Manning’s retirement following the Super Bowl 50 win. While many believed Russell Wilson would be the answer, his two seasons in Denver ended with him now in Pittsburgh, leaving the Broncos to start fresh with another young quarterback.

One of Nix’s greatest assets is his extensive experience. During his college career, he played in 61 games, threw for over 15,000 yards, and recorded 113 touchdowns against 26 interceptions.

Nix’s collegiate career stats are impressive: he finished sixth in NCAA history with 1,936 pass attempts, sixth in passing yards with 15,351, and seventh in completions with 1,286. He also ranked 17th in NCAA history with 113 passing touchdowns.

Currently, the Broncos list Nix as their third-string quarterback, behind starter Jarrett Stidham and backup Zach Wilson.
