Utah State Defensive Back Passes Away In Accident
Tragedy struck the Utah State program after the news of the passing of cornerback Andre Seldon, Jr on Saturday evening.
The Utah State football program has confirmed the tragic news of his passing via their “X” account.
Seldon Jr was a four-star recruit in Michigan’s 2020 class that enrolled in the winter of that year. While in Ann Arbor, he earned a spot on the Big Ten’s All-Academic Team. He transferred to New Mexico State for the 2022 season. The former NMSU athlete logged 96 tackles, 13 passes defended, and two interceptions during his two seasons there. He then committed to transfer to TCU in January of this year. After spending the spring in Fort Worth, Seldon committed to transfer to Utah State in May.
He was just 22 years old at the time of his passing, reportedly due to drowning while cliff diving at Porcupine Reservoir. Utah State officials confirmed the news of his untimely death. They have released statements from interim head coach Nate Dreiling as follows:
“Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own,” said
interim head coach and defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling. “Having had a previous
relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was
an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family
as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss.”Dreiling was Seldon’s defensive coordinator at NMSU.
Additionally, Vice President and Director of Athletics Diana Sabau released a statement as seen below:
“Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated over the sudden death of Andre Seldon
Jr.,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Diana Sabau. “We extend our deepest
sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who loved
Andre.”Tragically, this accident comes just one year after a similar incident that resulted in the death of Oregon’s Spencer Webb. Just like Webb, Both athletes were 22 years old.
