Key Matchups in the upcoming 2024 Big 12 Conference Football Season

The 2024 Big 12 Conference Football season will be bigger than usual, and hopefully, even better. 

Instead of 14 teams, this season will see an additional two be added to the mix, creating a 16-team conference. This will mean that there will be more games being played, which is great for college football fans and those who enjoy this conference in particular.

We’ve lost Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns from the conference – which some will consider a big blow – but have seen four teams enter the division. Colorado Buffaloes (coached by Deion Sanders) will return after a 13-year absence, while they will be joined by the Arizona Wildcats, Arizona State Sun Devils and Utah Utes.

What happened last season?

The 2023 Big 12 Conference Football Championship Game saw the Texas Longhorns emerge victorious after they defeated the Oklahoma State Cowboys 49-21 on December 2 at AT&T Stadium.

As we know, the Longhorns will no longer be competing in the Big 12 as they are now part of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Therefore, we will be getting a new champion when the 2024 Bowl Game takes place sometime in December.

Utah at Oklahoma State

On September 21, we can expect to see one of the biggest Big 12 Conference clashes to take place as Utah will travel to Oklahoma State. It’s a Week 4 game, but it will be a Conference opener for both of them. Many believe they are among the strongest in the division, therefore we should see plenty of entertaining football on the gridiron. It’s also a once-in-a-lifetime match, as they’ve only played each other once in the past, with that encounter happening in 1945.

BYU at Utah

November 9 will see BYU head to Utah in another of the top Big 12 Conference matches likely to take place this season. The Week 11 contest is one of the biggest rivalries in college sports – dubbed ‘The Holy War’ – and it will be the first time the two college football teams have shared the field together since 2021. It could be the game of the season for the Big 12, and one that will really grip an entire nation when it does take place.

Oklahoma State at Kansas State

Oklahoma State will go from their Week 4 encounter with the Utah Utes on September 21 to playing Kansas State a week later in Week 5 of the Big 12 schedule. This game can be one of the biggest of the season as there is a lot that could be on the line at this stage of the campaign. It goes without saying, but the Cowboys can do without a repeat of what happened in 2022, where they were beaten on the road 41-0. With a tough two-week stretch happening for Oklahoma, it could be incredibly telling on whether they will be successful or not in the 2024 Big 12 Conference season.
