Which Quarterback Fits Best for the Washington Commanders at No. 2?

One of the most common questions I’ve received during this draft season is about the Washington Commanders’ pick at No. 2. There’s been a lot of back-and-forth in my mock drafts between Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye, and for good reason.
It boils down to two main considerations: the best fit for the team and what I actually think will happen. When I think of the Commanders, Kliff Kingsbury being there as the offensive coordinator immediately comes to mind. Kingsbury’s past coaching roster includes names like Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray, and Johnny Manziel – all known for their mobility and playmaking abilities.
At first glance, Jayden Daniels seems to fit this profile better, given his agility and knack for extending plays. However, let’s not overlook Drake Maye. He possesses similar qualities and has the added dimension of being an effective runner – a factor that often goes unnoticed.
Furthermore, Washington’s recent affinity for North Carolina talent, seen in their picks of Sam Howell and Dyami Brown, could sway the decision towards Maye, who hails from the same program.
Ultimately, while Daniels may seem like the technical fit, Maye’s versatility and potential connections to the organization make him a strong contender. It’s a tough call, and I’ve been going back and forth between the two for a while. But when it comes down to it, Maye could very well be the guy Washington selects at No. 2. However, all the signs point to Jayden Daniels.
