Player Summary:
Luke Grimm is a returning 4th year junior with below-average size and adequate speed. He has played 26 games during his time at Kansas posting his most productive season in 2022. Grimm is a smaller receiver with adequate athletic ability. He closes the athletic gap with his rare playing speed that is seen the most in his route running. Grimm lacks the play strength needed to be an effective slot receiver. Grimm has rare instincts that he shows running routes and completing catches. Compared to other receivers nationally his production is poor, yet he is productive with his opportunities (12 GP, 52 rec. 4 catches per game). Grimm has rare agility and balance that allow him to separate from defenders. He is a rare route runner. He has a good release and quickness at the LOS. He adds a rare burst to his route running that allows him to be effective on quick game routes and out/in breaking intermediate routes. He needs to get stronger taking on collisions by the defenders while in his routes. He is a more effective route runner vs OFF coverage rather than ON coverage. Grimm’s hands are elite. He has a rare ability to adjust to the football from anywhere on the field. His size and arm length create a small and adequate catch radius which can make it hard for him to finish a vertical and/or poorly thrown football. He has rare field awareness that makes him an extra coach on the field. This awareness allows the play caller to move him around the formation. Grimm is adequate after the catch. He is a bigger threat before the catch. He is not as dangerous after he catches the football. While blocking defenders, Grimm plays with rare effort but poor effectiveness. He does not display the strength to move defenders in the run game.
Scheme Fit:
11 personnel, “slot” friendly offense (Rams, Vikings, Bengals)
Power Statement:
Luke Grimm is an above-average receiver prospect. He has above-receiver skills (route running, catching). In 2023, he will need to show that he can play and be productive outside. Grimm needs to show improvement as a blocker in the slot.
