What made you decide you wanted to be a football player?
Growing up I was always around football, my dad played and coached in the NFL so it was inevitable for me. As a kid I tried almost every sport there was but football stuck out to me the most, I just love the game of football and feel it’s my destiny to be apart of this game for as long as I can.
What are your favorite moments from your football life?
I’ll have to say the connections I made and the brotherhoods I made with my teammates most importantly. And just the excitement you get when your name is called by the commentators for making a big play or scoring a touchdown, it’s like all eyes are on you and that’s a feeling I love and live for. The walk out of the tunnel is one of my favorite parts of game day it’s like I enter a different mode and all that matters is the game nothing else, getting those those butterflies of excitement and just wanting to do great and put on a show for your family the fans and team of course is the best part. And of course there’s nothing as exciting as a rivalry game.
Which one of your family members inspires you the most and why?
My mom definitely inspires me the most. Seeing her sacrifice so much for me and my sister growing up showed me how dedicated her love is to us and how strong and independent of a woman she is. And made sure she made every sporting event no matter what she had to do. To this day I look in the stands to find her before the game starts. She taught me a lot and is always my number one supporter, she is truly my idol in so many ways and the backbone of the family, she holds us all together. But I truly have the best support system anyone could ask for, from my mom to my dad and my sister they’re always there for me and each-other and I love them all to death truly grateful for them.
What are you looking forward to in your upcoming season?
I’m looking forward to putting together my best season ever statistically and film wise personally to help me get a chance at the next level. And of course a winning season with my guys, another conference championship ring and a bowl game! And to be the best teammate I can be on and off the field because I truly love those guys in the locker room to death.
If you could hang out with any football player past or present for a day who and why?
Past Jerry Rice and Chad Ochocinco, because they’re students of the game, so would love to soak up all of their knowledge. And Ocho was a dawg and came with a lot of energy! Present I would say Stefon Diggs and Odell because they are playmakers on the field and they inspire the youth and others to be yourself and to be comfortable in your own skin. Stefon and Odell are both big in the fashion world as well, so that’s something I look at because I’m big into fashion myself.
What are your favorite things about playing football for Jacksonville State?
First hard edge mentality coach Rich Rodriguez adopted into the program. Second the brotherhood and camaraderie of the team and we have one goal, which is to be the hardest working group of guys in the country and to WIN. And third we are one sound and one heartbeat.
What should we know about Perry Carter Jr the person?
Off the field I’m a very caring and loving person. Since a kid my goal has always been to be very successfully so I can take care of everyone around me but to also give back to my community and those in need all around the world. I feel my purpose of living is to be a vessel to help others and show them the way, so I give all I have everyday to make sure I can be that person to help impact as many lives as I can and bring as much great positive change to this world as I can while I’m here.
What is your favorite offensive scheme and why?
Air Raid, attacking and stressing the defense vertically, stretching the field and just letting the ball fly. I love the fast pace offense and being able to be a deep threat, that is my game.
How do you handle challenges both in life and on the football field?
Personally I handle challenges by thinking about my support system (family), and all the ones looking up to me, because truly it’s for all of them never just me. So it helps keep me going knowing that they believe in me and are rooting for me to succeed at life. Also I know in this life everyone goes through trials and tribulations, and always stood true to that, “God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers.”, So I firmly believe that “when the smoke clears that I’ll still be standing.” And on the field I have a short memory so if I mess up I move on to the next play and stay positive and always know that mistakes happen in football but it’s about how you can adjust and overcome adversity.
What would a team get in a player like you?
Of course all the physical and gifted traits and rare speed. But most importantly a man very dedicated to his craft and being he’s best day in and day out, with a work ethic that is unmatched. Someone who is willing to go above and beyond to be he’s best for the team and the organization and to hold the team accountable to be at their best at all times on and off the field. I’m someone that truly has passion and love for this game and for the guys in that locker with me and the whole staff.
What stands out about your film the most?
Speed and separation. When the ball is not in my hands I’m still creating separation and showing I’m a deep threat and able to always pass defenders, and when I have the ball in my hands I’m a playmaker who always gets yards after the catch and for a smaller guy I make the hard contested tough catches and also can slip tackles consistently.
Who is the most underrated player you’ve played with and why?
Malik Jackson, he’s a running back here at Jacksonville State and we have been teammates since we started our college career at the University of Louisiana Monroe. He’s a very electric player and a dawg on the field at all times. Definitely deserves more recognition than he has gotten, but I know he’ll have a breakout season this coming up year. We’re like blood brothers and ever since day 1 we’ve sacrificed together, we grind together night and day and always in each other corner. We compete to be 1A so we always hold each other accountable and never let one another slack. We give each other energy on and off the field so it feels good to be back on the same team this year with my brother.
