Player Summary:
LT Starter, RS Sr. Possesses elite size and strength standing at 6’7” with a well proportioned build and long arms. Possesses good versatility as he started games at RT, moved to RG, and ended up playing LT. Valuable in both facets of the offense however, puts his best work on film in the run game. In the run game, he displays very good AA, but the flaws come from technique issues which are fixable. He lacks speed off the ball, and lacks quick hand placement, however makes up for this by using his good reach with his long arms to get a physical battle started. Plays with average leverage for his height, relying on his strength and length to move defenders backwards instead of staying over his toes, balanced with his hips sunk. Good puller due to his ability to flip his hips and seal the edge, creating lanes for the ball carrier. Lack of COD and mobility restrain him from being a good blocker in space on screens, however, can be of value while pulling to 2nd level LBs due to his length and physicality. Displays good competitive toughness with good effort through the whistle. In the passing game, he has slow hands and average hand placement, unable to get both hands latched inside. Plays wide a wide base and solid leverage out of his stance, however, narrows his stance while becoming engaged with rushers, then losing leverage and getting walked back into the QB. Plays best against power rushers, relying on his size and strength to negate the rush, however can get walked back due to a lack of technique. Poor ability to pass protect against speed moves due to lack of lateral mobility and slower hands. Displays ability to recognize twists and stunts, using his long reach to pick up oncoming rushers. Can spin the barrel against spin moves due to his long arms as well. Ability to recover and redirect due to his good hip flexibility and length. Always looking to chip and get extra work.
Scheme Fit:
RT in a run heavy offense
Power Statement:
Johnson is a physical blocker with elite size and strength who uses his abilities best in the run game. Lacks technique in run and pass game, however, they are coachable issues. With good coaching, he is an elite sized prospect who could be of value to an NFL team.
