Diamond Talk: Trevor Merritt, DB, Bethune-Cookman University | HBCU Standout CB
Trevor Merritt the Rockledge, Florida native is a shutdown cornerback for the Wildcats. A 5’10 cornerback weighing 185 pounds is a dog. Merritt played high school in Florida for Viera High, and was a standout cornerback. He caught the attention of some big schools like FIU, FAMU, Monmouth, Mercer, South Alabama, South Dakota State, FAU, and Tennessee State, but the three star recruit chose Bethune-Cookman after changing his verbal commit to Mercer.
He was an animal in high school racking up 78 tackles, and recorded two interceptions. He did bat down five passes as well.
Merritt played in every game his Freshman year, and was a reserve defensive back. He finished with 30 tackles and registered 3.5 tackles for loss, and recovered one fumble.
Merritt played in 11 games his Sophomore season including four starts. He tallied 39 tackles finishing fifth on the team in the category.
Last year as a Junior, he shared MEAC lead with 4 interceptions and also racked up 36 tackles, 1 TFL, 4 PBU, and 4 passes defended. He finished with two pick sixes in back-to-back games against Mississippi Valley State and South Carolina State.
He was a 2018 ALL MEAC second team defense and I feel he will have an opportunity to play at the next level.
