NFL Draft Diamonds Scouting Report: Courtland Sutton, WR, SMU

  • Courtland Sutton, Wide Receiver
  • SMU
  • Height: 6’3″
  • Weight: 218 lbs.
Pros: Tracks the ball extremely well while it’s in the air. Uses his big frame and height to box out defenders from getting the ball. Deceptively quick. Can make explosive plays if players play too far off in short passing situations. Works for every ball, even if it’s thrown at him. Uses hands consistently when it comes to corners who press. Possesses strong hands and can win consistently with contested catches. Great in the middle of the field, doesn’t shy away from contact. Great blocker and is physical in every aspect of his game.
Cons: Doesn’t possess a second gear, typically has one set speed. Will have to separate more in the NFL. Sometimes has focus drops. Will have to clean up some later hand fighting as he could get called for offensive pass interference more in the second level. Typically not someone who is going to make defenders miss with his agility. Sometimes slows down on routes if the pass is late, resulting in a struggle to make it back to the ball is thrown his way.
Overall: Sutton is going to be a big red zone target and that’s where his skill set flashes. He’s able to use his size to box out defenders in slant routes and can high point the ball. He will have to clean up some route running to allow better separation at the next level. He’s a tough player who’s willing to be a possession receiver and be depended upon. He’s not the type of guy who’s going to win with speed, but rather with his size and strength. Sutton will have to be more consistent with catching the ball, but there’s a lot to like and build upon when watching Sutton’s tape.
