2016 NFL Scouting Notes: D’haquille Williams, WR, Auburn

Continuing Scouting Notes tonight we take a look at a player who most Draft enthusiasts thought would be a 2nd round pick at worst last year, but who decided to return to Auburn for his senior season. Wide Receiver D’haquille Williams, here are my notes:

D’Haquille Williams. 6’2”. 224 lbs. Senior. Auburn

The Positives

1) Good Speed

2) Good size

3) Has good hands

4) Decent route runner

5) Can break some tackles and make guys miss

The Negatives

1) Must improve run blocking

2) Does not sell the play well (meaning defender can tell when play is designed away from him, or designed a run, as his effort is noticeably less than a pass play where he is involoved)

Williams was widely thought to be a surefire 2nd round pick at the worst last season, but he opted to return to Auburn for his senior season. He plays mostly out of the slot WR position, but does move around some. He has the ability to make some guys miss, as well as break some tackles, and he has usually sure hands. His route running is ok, not the best, definitely not the worst. He must improve run blocking to succeed at the next level, and he does not “sell” the play well. If the ball is going to the opposite side of him, or if it’s a run play, his effort is noticeably less than when he may be involved in the play. NFL defenders are smart and will use this as a way to key in to what the offense is doing. Williams can be a playmaker, but he needs to improve in the above areas if he wants to be a star at the next level.
