2016 NFL Draft Scouting Notes: Trevor Knight, QB, Oklahoma

Film watching of the current season has finally just begun, but until I get enough footage to review we will continue along with scouting notes. Tonight we look at a player who is inconsistent, but when he is good, he is very good. Here are my notes:

Trevor Knight. QB. 6’1. 206 Lbs. Oklahoma. (RS Junior)

The Positives

1) Has a strong arm

2) Has good mobility

3) Has good speed

The Negatives

1) Has inconsistent accuracy

2) Is a bit shorter than some NFL teams would like

3) Needs to improve speed of going through his progressions.

Trevor Knight is an interesting prospect to watch because you get a different look at him each game you watch. Standing at only 6’1 he is a bit shorter than many NFL teams would prefer, but his athleticism will bring him plenty of attention. He has good ability to move around in the pocket to avoid the rush, and great scrambling ability. He has good speed, with the ability to reach a second gear to get around the corner or to hit the seam to get to the first down marker. Knight’s fundamentals are usually good. He does not stand flat footed in the pocket, he squares his hips and steps into his throws. His accuracy passing the ball however is very inconsistent. There are times where his passes sail over the receivers’ heads, and others where he drops the ball into the hands of a WR running 50 yards down the sideline. I have to wonder if he maybe plays bigger in the big games so to say. For example, against TCU he was ok at best, but against Alabama he was lights out the whole game. Some players have a knack for playing big in the big moments, this will be something I watch closely this season. Knight is only a redshirt junior, so he has this year and next to work on his game if he so chooses. If he has a very productive year and can become more consistent with his accuracy however he may choose to enter the draft this year. He has all the passing tools, and add to that great scrambling ability and you have a player that will intrigue many NFL scouts.
