2016 NFL Draft Scouting Notes: Patrick Towles, QB, Kentucky

Continuing on with our scouting notes we take a look at another draft eligible underclassman. As always these notes are based on previous year’s film and will precede the full scouting report that will come later this season. Here are my notes:
Patrick Towles. QB. 6’5. 240 Lbs. (RS Junior). Kentucky

The Positives

1) Very mobile for his size

2) Has prototypical NFL size

3) Has good fundamentals most of the time

4) Good arm strength

The Negatives

1) Has just ok accuracy, struggles with deep ball accuracy

2) Decision making needs improvement

Patrick Towles may not be the best QB in the SEC, but he may well be the best NFL prospect. Standing at 6’5 and weighing 240 Lbs. he has the prototypical NFL size, and very good mobility to go with it. He is able to escape the rush and gain yards with his legs, outrunning and at times running through tacklers. He has a fairly strong arm, and he usually plays with good fundamentals, squaring his hips and stepping into his throws, and because of this his accuracy is most of the time good. He does need improvement with his deep throw accuracy. Towles’s biggest weakness in his game is his decision making. He struggles in going through his progressions, and at times throws into coverage. Last season he threw for 2,718 yards, 14 TD’s, and 9 INT’s. He will need to improve his decision making and his deep ball accuracy, but there is no doubt that NFL scouts will be watching this kid. With Ben Roethlisberger type size and mobility, and all the tools needed to become a dangerous passer, Towles will be an interesting player to keep tabs on over the next few years.
