2016 NFL Draft Scouting Notes: Kevin Hogan, QB, Stanford

Tonight in scouting notes we look at a player who has had his ups and downs during his career, but he has decided to return to college as a 5th year senior. As always these notes are based on previous year’s film, and will precede the full scouting report which you will be able to find right here on nfldraftdiamonds.com after I can view some games from the upcoming season. Here are my notes:
Kevin Hogan, QB, 6’4, 225 Lbs. Stanford, (RS Senior)
The Positives
1) Good NFL size
2) Has a strong arm
3) Is fairly mobile
The Negatives
1) Is inconsistent with his fundamentals
2) Accuracy is not very good, especially deep ball
3) Does not stand tall in pocket in the face of pressure
There were high hopes for Kevin Hogan when he was recruited to Stanford, but they haven’t yet fully come to fruition. While he does have ideal NFL size (standing at 6’4 and 225 Lbs.) and a strong arm, he has more negative aspects to his game than positive right now. He does not always play with good fundamentals, sometimes he will square his hips and step into his throw, and sometimes he won’t. His accuracy is not good at all, often missing even short to medium throws, and his deep ball accuracy definitely needs to be improved. On top of his less than stellar accuracy he seems to not have the ability to throw with any touch. He throws the ball with the same velocity whether the receiver is 7 yards away or 40, often making the ball very difficult to catch for his receivers. He does have some escape ability and decent mobility for a QB of his size, and he does have the ability to throw on the run. Hogan has the tools needed to become a solid player at the QB position, he just for whatever reason has not put it all together yet. Perhaps this is why he has returned to school this year, all it will take is one solid season and an improvement on his fundamentals (the two go hand in hand really), and he will find himself moving up the draft boards come next April.
