Jaylon Smith the Notre Dame linebacker was very smart, and he proved it by purchasing loss of value insurance which ranges up to 5 million dollars. According to Ian Rapoport, the Notre Dame LB Jaylon Smith (knee, ankle) had a $5 million loss of value insurance policy.

Rapoport adds that if Smith paid the premiums, he would receive this sum of money tax-free. Marcus Lattimore is the first person that comes to mind when you look at the kind of injury that occurred to Smith.

Former South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore, who also suffered a catastrophic knee injury against Tennessee in 2012, had to retire early. Lattimore had been attempting to play for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, who drafted him in the fourth round in 2013, but he never truly did recover from the knee injury.

Jaylon Smith is a top tier prospect, but this injury could be major for his stock.  Watch a team like the Patriots draft him as he falls, and stash him away.  I am not sure Smith will go in the first round after all, but we will see what happens.

Smith is already expected to miss the entire 2016 season, so can you honestly spend a draft pick on him to just let him sit there?  Someone will more than likely, but he is facing a long road to recovery.
