Tua Tagovailoa Injury Update: Could Tua start in week 1?

The Atlanta Falcons received a concerning injury scare Thursday when starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered an oblique injury during practice, just days before the team’s season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Tagovailoa was officially listed as a limited participant on Atlanta’s Thursday injury report after experiencing discomfort during practice. The injury occurred during the portion of practice open to the media, with video showing the veteran quarterback throwing a pass before appearing to stagger and grab at his back.

Tagovailoa briefly went to the ground before getting back to his feet. He did not appear to throw again during the portion of practice available to reporters.

The injury is particularly significant because Tagovailoa was only named Atlanta’s Week 1 starter earlier this week. The Falcons selected him to start Sunday’s matchup against Pittsburgh, while second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr. continues working his way back from an ACL injury suffered last season.

With Tagovailoa sidelined during Thursday’s practice, veteran quarterback Cooper Rush received the majority of the first-team reps.
