Airman Dies Following Rappelling Accident Before UTSA-Navy Football Game

A U.S. Air Force service member died Saturday night after suffering critical injuries in a rappelling accident before the University of Texas at San Antonio’s football game against the Naval Academy at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
A spokesperson for Nellis Air Force Base confirmed that the airman was assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2. The service member died from injuries sustained during a pregame military demonstration.
The incident occurred before kickoff during UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces & Veterans game, an event honoring military members and veterans. Four military personnel were scheduled to rappel from the rafters of the Alamodome to the stadium floor as part of the ceremony.
According to the San Antonio Express-News, one of the participants reportedly lost control during the descent, sliding down the rope in an uncontrolled manner before striking the ground with significant force.
Football personnel rushed to assist the injured service member, while medical responders provided emergency treatment at the scene. The individual was subsequently placed on a stretcher and transported for further medical care.
The San Antonio Fire Department confirmed to Task & Purpose that it transported a person suffering from life-threatening injuries to a hospital. The Air Force later confirmed the service member had died.
The fatal accident cast a shadow over a pregame ceremony intended to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of members of the United States Armed Forces.
The service member’s identity and further details surrounding the circumstances of the accident were not included in the initial information provided.
The incident remains a tragic reminder of the risks military personnel face while carrying out demonstrations and training activities, even during events designed to honor their service and sacrifice.
