Buffalo Bills should make a huge push to sign defensive lineman D.J. Reader

The Buffalo Bills are entering a new era on defense, and if they want their transition to a 3-4 scheme under new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard to be successful, they need to start in the trenches. That’s exactly why signing D.J. Reader should be at the top of their priority list.
Switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense isn’t just a schematic tweak—it’s a philosophical shift. The backbone of any effective 3-4 front is a dominant nose tackle who can control the line of scrimmage, occupy blockers, and allow linebackers to flow freely. Reader is built for that role.
At 6-foot-3 and over 330 pounds, Reader is one of the premier “space eaters” in the NFL. During his time with the Cincinnati Bengals and Detroit Lions, he consistently anchored the middle of the defense, demanding double teams and disrupting interior rushing lanes. His presence doesn’t always show up in flashy stat lines, but his impact is undeniable—he does the dirty work that allows everyone else to shine.
For Buffalo, that kind of player is invaluable right now. In a 3-4 defense, the nose tackle is responsible for controlling both A-gaps, freeing up linebackers like Terrell Bernard and edge rushers to make plays. Without a true anchor in the middle, the entire system can collapse. Reader gives the Bills that stability.
More importantly, he would immediately elevate the players around him. Edge rushers like Greg Rousseau and blitzing linebackers Bradley Chubb, can benefit greatly when the interior offensive line is occupied. Reader’s ability to command double teams would create more one-on-one opportunities on the outside—something every pass rusher thrives on.
There’s also a tone-setting element to Reader’s game. The Bills have made it clear this offseason that they want to get tougher and more physical on defense. Adding a proven, battle-tested interior force aligns perfectly with that vision. Reader brings a level of grit and physicality that can redefine the identity of Buffalo’s front seven.
Durability and experience are additional bonuses. Reader has played in big games, including a Super Bowl run, and understands what it takes to compete deep into the postseason. For a Bills team that is firmly in win-now mode, that kind of veteran presence matters.
In many ways, this potential move mirrors what successful 3-4 defenses across the league have done, invest in a true nose tackle who can be the centerpiece of the front. Without that piece, the scheme is incomplete. With it, everything starts to click.
If Buffalo is serious about maximizing the potential of Jim Leonhard’s defense, signing D.J. Reader isn’t just a good move, it’s a necessary one.
