Colorado QB Dominiq Ponder dies in single-car crash at 23

Colorado quarterback Dominiq Ponder died early Sunday morning following a single-car crash in Boulder County. He was 23.
The University of Colorado athletic department expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting that Ponder embodied passion, leadership, toughness, and intelligence, and was highly respected by teammates and coaches. Support and condolences were extended to his family and the entire team during the difficult time.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, the crash occurred around 3 a.m. Sunday. Ponder was driving a 2023 Model 3 manufactured by Tesla when he lost control on a curve. The vehicle crossed the eastbound lane, struck a guardrail and an electrical line pole, rolled down an embankment, and caught fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators indicated that speed is suspected to have been a factor, with a full investigation ongoing.
Ponder was a third-year sophomore from Opa-locka, Florida. He transferred to Colorado after spending time at Bethune-Cookman University. Over the past two seasons with the Buffaloes, he appeared in two games last season, recording two rushes and a pass attempt, after not seeing action in 2024.
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders shared his grief publicly, remembering Ponder as a beloved, respected leader and offering prayers for all who knew him. Offensive coordinator Brennan Marion also expressed heartbreak, describing Ponder as a joy to coach and extending support to his family and the team, particularly the quarterback room.
Please keep the Ponder family in your prayers.
