A small Iowa community is mourning the loss of 17-year-old Carson Ryan, a senior at Washington High School, who was accidentally shot and killed during a hunting trip over the weekend.

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the tragic incident occurred Saturday afternoon in Brighton, about 12 miles from Des Moines. Ryan was struck in the back of the head by a member of his hunting party who reportedly mistook him for a squirrel.

The varsity football standout, known for both his fierce competitiveness on the field and his kindness off it, was rushed to UI Health Care Medical Center but later died from his injuries.

Friends, family, and classmates have since rallied to support the Ryan family. A GoFundMe campaign launched in his honor has already raised more than $55,000 dollars.

Please keep the Ryan family in your prayers.
