Chandler Jones, Former CFL Coach and NFL Player, Dies at 33

The football community is mourning the loss of Chandler Jones, a rising coach and former player whose passion for the game touched many across leagues and levels. The Montreal Alouettes confirmed on Monday that Jones passed away suddenly and accidentally on Sunday morning at the age of 33. No additional details regarding the cause of death were released.
Jones most recently served as the assistant defensive backs coach for the Alouettes during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. In his first year on staff, he helped guide Montreal to a Grey Cup championship, leaving a lasting mark on a defense that played with discipline and heart.
“We are devastated by the news of Chandler’s passing,” said Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia in a statement. “Our thoughts are with Chandler’s family and loved ones as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. We extend our heartfelt condolences and offer them our full support.”
Before his time in the CFL coaching ranks, Jones began his coaching career with his alma mater, San Jose State University, serving on the Spartans’ staff from 2017 to 2019. As a former player, he spent time with the Alouettes as part of their practice roster in 2015 and also had stints in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns.
Jones was known for his football mind, work ethic, and ability to connect with players—traits that made him a respected figure both on and off the field.
His passing comes as a deep loss to those who worked alongside him and those who followed his journey from the college gridiron to the professional ranks. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, leadership, and love for the game that will not be forgotten.
