The sports community is mourning the sudden loss of Chase Stegall, a sophomore midfielder on the DePaul University men’s soccer team and the son of legendary football player Milt Stegall. He was just 20 years old.

Chase “passed away unexpectedly” on the morning of Monday, June 2, at his residence hall on DePaul’s Lincoln Park campus in Chicago. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed, and the university stated that details regarding a memorial service will be announced when available.

Stegall, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, made a strong impact on the field during the 2023 season, appearing in 16 of DePaul’s 17 games. His teammates and coaches remembered him as a dedicated player, teammate, and friend whose presence brought energy and unity to the team.

Chase was the son of Milt Stegall, a former wide receiver who spent three seasons with the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals before becoming one of the most celebrated players in Canadian Football League (CFL) history. Milt played 14 seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, earning a place in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2012.

News of Chase’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief from both the soccer and football communities. DePaul Athletics shared condolences, honoring Chase for his contributions on and off the field.

“Chase was a beloved member of the DePaul community,” the university said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the Stegall family, his teammates, coaches, and all those whose lives he touched.”

As friends, family, and fans await further information, tributes continue to pour in, honoring a young life full of promise and potential.
