Reports: Pac-12 Rivals Agree to Extend Series

The Apple Cup rivals agreed to extend the long-running Apple Cup series on Sunday afternoon. It will be a nonconference rivalry game as Washington will join the Big Ten next season. Chris Vannini of The Athletic was on the news

The Apple Cup will be played in Seattle next season at Lumen Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks instead of Husky Stadium. 2011 was the first time that the game moved from its traditional sites as Husky Stadium was undergoing renovations. It will then proceed back to a home-and-home series through the 2028 season.

Washington has dominated the series by a margin of 75 to 33 with six ties. They have won 17 of the 22 matchups since the turn of the century, including seven of the last eight games. The agreement comes off the heels of a ruling made by a judge regarding the fate of the Pac-12’s assets and liabilities.

Washington has already clinched a berth in the Pac-12 championship game while Wazzu needs a win to clinch bowl eligibility. UW is undefeated and will look to maintain or improve its standing in the College Football Playoff race. They are currently ranked fifth in the rankings pending Tuesday’s reveal.

What will happen to the Civil War?

Meanwhile, John Canzano, formerly of the Oregonian, reports that Oregon and Oregon State are in talks to extend their series. The game is colloquially known as the Civil War.

The game, if agreed upon, will be played in September instead of its traditional Thanksgiving holiday weekend date. Oregon has nonconference games scheduled against Boise State in the next two seasons. The Broncos from the blue turf will have to be accommodated, whether it be fiscally or moving games around to other seasons.

Much like their Big Ten counterparts from the North, Oregon has dominated the Civil War series to the tune of 67-49-10. Oregon has won 15 of the 23 matchups since the turn of the century. However, Oregon State has won two of the past three games in the series.
