Former Georgia State Football Player Killed in Atlanta Apartment Shooting

A former Myrtle Beach High School football player was killed Tuesday afternoon in a shooting at an Atlanta apartment complex, according to authorities.

Atlanta police responded to the Flats on Maple Street apartment complex, located at 55 Maple St. NW in the city’s Vine City neighborhood, at approximately 3 p.m. following reports of a shooting involving multiple victims.

DeMazio Skelton Jr., 35, a Myrtle Beach native and former football standout, was found dead at the scene, according to local reports. The shooting involved four victims. Two were transported to area hospitals, while a fourth victim was later taken to Grady Memorial Hospital by private vehicle.

Skelton’s football career continued beyond high school. He went on to play college football at Georgia State University, where he was listed as a safety for the Panthers during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

According to his Georgia State football biography, Skelton was a versatile player during his time at Myrtle Beach High School, contributing on both sides of the football. He played wide receiver and safety for the Myrtle Beach Seahawks in 2009.

News of Skelton’s death has brought sadness to the Myrtle Beach football community, where he was remembered as a former player who continued his football journey to the collegiate level.

The investigation into the Atlanta shooting remains ongoing. Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting or the events leading up to Skelton’s death.
