Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Kevin Johnson has died after suffering blunt head trauma and stab wounds, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

Johnson, 55, was found unconscious Wednesday morning at a homeless encampment and was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide, and authorities have launched an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding it.

A fourth-round draft pick by the New England Patriots in the 1993 NFL Draft, Johnson carved out a professional career that included stops with the Patriots, Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders, and the Eagles. He spent two seasons in Philadelphia, recording 43 tackles, seven sacks, and returning a fumble for a touchdown. Johnson also appeared in 15 games for the Raiders during the 1997 season.

Following his NFL career, Johnson continued playing professionally in the Arena Football League, suiting up for teams in Orlando and Los Angeles. A Los Angeles native, he played his college football at Texas Southern University.

Investigators believe Johnson was living at the encampment at the time of his death. Friends told authorities that Johnson had faced ongoing health challenges later in life, which contributed to his difficult circumstances.

Johnson’s passing marks a tragic end to the life of a former professional athlete whose journey included both on-field success and personal hardship. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
