Shootings break out at Jackson State, Alcorn State on homecomings | 1 Dead at Alcorn State

Two separate shootings were reported Saturday, October 11, connected to Mississippi college campuses — one at Jackson State University and another at Alcorn State University.
The incidents came on the heels of three separate shootings Friday night tied to high school football events across the state.
According to Hinds County Sheriff and Interim Jackson Police Chief Tyree Jones, the Jackson State shooting occurred near the tailgate area outside the university’s stadium on West Street, during the school’s homecoming festivities. A child was struck by gunfire and rushed to the University of Mississippi Medical Center by Jackson Police officers in a patrol vehicle. Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesperson Bailey Martin confirmed that the child was shot in the abdomen.
Jones urged all attendees at the Jackson State stadium and nearby homecoming events to clear the area immediately as law enforcement secured the scene.
Later that evening, a separate shooting at Alcorn State University left one woman dead and two others injured. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. near the Industrial Technology Building, according to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.
Responding officers found three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Claiborne County Sheriff Edward Goods confirmed that one victim, 29-year-old Brekyra Fisher of Vicksburg, died from her injuries. Her family has been notified, said Claiborne County Coroner Kieon Neal.
Alcorn State University Police Chief Doug Stewart has turned the investigation over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, which is now leading the case.
