Tragedy in Tennessee: Ole Miss Freshman Football Player Corey Adams Killed in Shooting

The University of Mississippi and the wider football community are mourning the tragic loss of freshman football player Corey Adams, who was killed in a shooting late Saturday night in Cordova, Tennessee, just outside Memphis.

According to a statement released by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene and discovered Adams, 18, suffering from a gunshot wound inside a vehicle at an intersection. Officers administered life-saving measures until emergency personnel from Shelby County Fire arrived, but Adams was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident, now being investigated as a homicide, left four other men with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Authorities say those individuals arrived at nearby hospitals in personal vehicles. As of Sunday, no suspects had been publicly named.

Adams, a native of New Orleans, had just begun his college journey at Ole Miss, where he was highly regarded as one of the nation’s top defensive line recruits. His future in college football looked bright, but his life was tragically cut short before he had the opportunity to take the field in Oxford.

The Ole Miss football program expressed its grief in a heartfelt statement shared on social media:

“While our program is trying to cope with this tragic loss, our thoughts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the post read. “We ask the Ole Miss community to keep Corey in their thoughts and respect the privacy of everyone involved.”

Back in New Orleans, Adams’ former high school, Edna Karr, also paid tribute to the young man, describing the profound sorrow felt by those who knew him.

“Corey Adams was more than a football player! He was a friend, brother, son, student, and all-around great young man,” the school posted on Facebook. “We never question God, but this is one we just don’t understand.”
