Zion Childress played at Texas State (20’-21’) before transferring to the University of Kentucky. He has a solid and athletic build to be physical. He also has good speed, agility and lateral quickness while in coverage. His backpedal isn’t smooth but appears to be bouncy at times. While in run support he has the ability to close gaps quickly. His athleticism allows him to match up well against opponents. His versatility can be seen in his ability to play different positions depending on the defensive scheme. He is also solid in pass coverage. Zion’s FB IQ allows for good instincts and vision to read the QB. He can effectively cover for his size and has the willingness to make tackles. Childress displays the ability to cover a lot of ground to make tackles near the LOS. A safety who can transition and find paths to the ball carrier. Has the ability to communicate well on the field and make plays when given the opportunity. Effective hands to intercept passes and have well-timed hits. He can effectively punch or strike the ball out. Zion can improve on his play consistency to avoid missing tackles. His speed is limited when facing elite receivers and when needed to close gaps on deep passes.
