Pittman’s Pocket: HBCU Defensive Lineman Shine in Week 2 FBS Matchups
Week 3 saw several HBCU defensive linemen making their presence felt against FBS opponents, showcasing their ability to generate pressure and production on the big stage.
FAMU vs. Miami Hurricanes:
FAMU’s defensive front stood out with multiple players recording sacks against the ACC powerhouse. Simion Hines led the way with a full sack, while Tyrese Gibson-Battles and James Ash each contributed half a sack, disrupting the Hurricanes’ offense.
Alcorn State vs. Vanderbilt:
Alcorn State also had strong performances in their matchup against Vanderbilt. Senior linebacker Stermarion Edwards made a significant impact with 3 tackles (all solo), 1 sack, and 2 tackles for loss (TFL). Defensive lineman Brendon Gibson added to the pressure with 3 tackles (1 solo), 1 sack, and 1 TFL.
These standout efforts in the trenches highlight the potential and growth of HBCU defensive linemen against top-tier competition. As they continue to improve, their impact on the field will only grow stronger.
