Player Summary:
Debo Williams the leader of the Gamecocks defense is a compact, thick muscular build ILB that plays the position with a tenacious attitude. Williams plays downhill and is extremely physical at the POA, once he knows, he goes! He can stun bigger offensive linemen with solid bursts and power, displacing the blocker when making the tackle. He has adequate lateral quickness, his experience and instincts allow him to read and play faster than his 40-time shows. Although physical at the POA if met with the same force his ability to shed bigger linemen is marginal, Lineman have shown they can get hands inside and control the smaller backer in the run game. In the passing game as a rusher, he doesn’t blitz often and when he does, he uses his height as leverage to bullrush. He is a straight-line rusher who doesn’t use finesse moves to get to the QB; he’s an old-school down-the-midline player. In coverage, he shows adequate speed covering backs out of the backfield and has solid fluidity in his hips when opening in coverage.
Overall, Williams is a hammer at the position and will often disregard his body to make a play on the ball. He will need to use his hands and add tools to his bag as he relies heavily on his physicality while rushing the passer. His FBI and AA allow him to play the game without hesitation which gives him the advantage against slower-moving blockers. Offenses with pre-snap motions slow his play, giving offensive linemen time to get to the second level and latch on.
Scheme Fit:
ILB, 3-4, 4-3
Power Statement:
Debo Williams shows he has the physicality and instincts to be productive at the next level. He is a disruptor who will provide a spark and make an impact on special teams having blocked multiple kicks throughout his collegiate career.
