What made you decide you wanted to be a football player?
I’ve been playing football since I was a kid, and it still brings me the same joy as it did back then. Playing a game can really clear your mind of everything else going on in your life. It’s an opportunity to go out there, compete, and have fun while enjoying the challenges with your friends and teammates.
What are your favorite moments from your football life?
Some of my favorite moments actually come from off the field. Of course, I’ve loved many of the successes, like my senior year of high school football and our deep playoff runs at Northwest. But the moments that truly stand out to me are the relationships I’ve built throughout my career.
Which one of your family members inspires you the most and why?
I would say that both of my parents inspire me the most. Growing up in a house with four kids around the same age and equally busy, they always made time for us. Anytime I needed anything, they would drop what they were doing to help me to the fullest. Whether hitting whiffle balls in the driveway or helping me with math homework, they were always there for me. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without their support and the sacrifices they made for me. I will always be grateful for their help and guidance along the way.
What are you looking forward to in your upcoming season?
What I’m most looking forward to this upcoming season is embracing the role of the underdog. Since I arrived at Northwest Missouri State, and even long before my time, Northwest has always been the team with a target on its back. Last year, we had an underwhelming season, finishing 7-4 and missing the playoffs for the first time in nearly 20 years. This year, I hope to see our team approach every game with a relaxed yet determined attitude, driven by the desire to prove ourselves.
If you could hang out with any football player past or present for a day who and why?
If I could hang out with any player, past or present, it would be Chris Jones. Not only is he one of the best defensive linemen of all time, but he also seems to have a ton of fun on the field.
What are your favorite things about playing football for NW Missouri State?
One of my favorite things about playing at Northwest is witnessing each player’s growth through the program. We are privileged to see so many great players and leaders come through our program. I believe this is one of the biggest reasons for Northwest’s success, as each class learns from the one before them, taking advantage of what each person has to offer, whether on the field or off. Having those role models to learn from is a huge advantage. I hope the younger classes will feel the same way about me when my time at Northwest is over.
What should we know about Jake Fisher the person?
A hard-working, team-first guy who is willing to do whatever it takes to help achieve excellence.
What is your favorite defensive scheme and why?
I enjoy our unique 4-3 defensive scheme at Northwest Missouri State. We focus on shutting down the run by closing off both the A and B gaps and forcing the ball to bounce outside. We maintain consistent steps against both the run and pass. We take pride in not needing to blitz, relying instead on our front four defensive linemen to apply pressure.
How do you handle challenges both in life and on the football field?
I handle challenges in life and on the football field similarly. First, I trust in God’s plan and seek strength through him. Additionally, I reach out to others, whether they are teammates, coaches, or family members, who are always willing to help, no matter the circumstance.
What would a team get in a player like you?
Someone who consistently shows up every day and gives their all. Also, someone who is open to listening and accepting criticism to improve.
What stands out about your film the most?
What stands out most about my film is the speed at which I play. I’m a player who isn’t afraid to take risks to make big plays. I use more finesse in my pass rush, using my athleticism to my advantage when pressuring the quarterback.
Who is the most underrated player you’ve played with and why?
The most underrated player I’ve played with is Derec Weyer. He’s a senior offensive tackle on our team this year and has made significant progress over the years. I expect big things from him this season.
