Pittman’s Pocket: HBCU Prospects Stepped Up Big Time in Their Preseason Openers
A new NFL season kicked off this Friday and Saturday with a series of exciting games, where former HBCU players made a significant impact.
While all eyes were on the Chicago Bears’ rookie sensation, quarterback Caleb Williams, it was undrafted rookie Ian Wheeler who stole the spotlight. The former Howard Bison had an impressive day, rushing 5 times for 43 yards and scoring 2 touchdowns, averaging an outstanding 8.6 yards per carry. Go Bison!
The Green Bay Packers showcased a dynamic duo in the backfield with Emanuel Wilson and Jarveon Howard. Wilson, a Fort Valley State graduate, carried the ball 13 times for 67 yards and a touchdown. Howard added 44 yards on 8 carries. Both former HBCU running backs averaged over 5 yards per carry, an impressive feat considering their limited time and reps.
Former FAMU running back Terrell Jennings, now with the New England Patriots, led the team with 6 rushes for 38 yards, averaging 6.3 yards per carry.
Two Alabama State Yellow Jackets, though not filling up the stat sheet, made crucial plays for their teams. Mikey Victor, a Hula Bowl alum with the Patriots, nearly secured an interception and played strong coverage throughout the game. His former teammate, Keenan Isaac of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, did come away with an interception against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Andrew Farmer from Lane College made his presence felt with the Chargers, recording 2 tackles in his preseason debut for year two.
All these standout performances came from undrafted players, proving their talent and determination on the field.
