Random NFL Combine Notes: Day 2

Typically, the weather at the Combine is miserably cold.  This year, the weather is unbelievably nice and unseasonably warm in Indianapolis.  Yesterday was over 60 degrees.  Today – Wednesday – is the coldest day, yet still above freezing at 37.  Temps will be higher on Thursday with a high of 46, but temps skyrocket – practically – over the weekend: 63 degrees Saturday, 70 degrees Sunday and 72 degrees Monday to close out the week.  Any first-time visitors to Indy might be shocked when we get back to “normal” Indy February weather – on the verge of frostbite – next year.

Even if it was normally cold, it wouldn’t matter.  Indy is a unique city in that you can get almost anywhere west of Meridian Street while staying indoors. You can walk from Lucas Oil Stadium to literally the Indiana governor’s office and practically every hotel, all while staying indoors, through a bunch of connected walkways and the expanded Indiana Convention Center, part of which has been built on the site of the RCA Dome – the Colts’ old home.

Personal note #1: my wife works downtown every day, so I’ve been riding with her during my coverage days. It has been nice to spend that time together. It has also felt life-threatening: downtown Indy during rush hour is legit Indy 500-level insanity, and she’s a downtown driver, which means she’s hard on the gas and equally hard on the brakes.

Personal note #2: after media combine activities on Tuesday, I had to hustle over to the east side of Indianapolis to cover a high school basketball game for The Indianapolis Star.  Suffice to say, after 10 posts on Draft Diamonds and a 780-word article about the game yesterday, my writing muscles are quite tired.

Former Steelers scout and current Senior Bowl scout Mark Gorscak will resume his post leading players through the 40-time when on-field activities begin tomorrow at Lucas Oil Stadium.  I was blessed to grab some coffee with Mark this morning.  He is an amazing friend to Draft Diamonds and the Hula Bowl.
