Who is better between Drake Maye and Caleb Williams?
I am the worst talent evaluator in the world when it comes to quarterbacks. I remember when my Buffalo Bills selected Josh Allen, I was pissed because I wanted the team to take Josh Rosen. I am so glad the Bills did not listen to me!
So, I am not trying to say that Drake Maye or Caleb Williams are the best quarterbacks, but according to the internet and Vegas Odds, they are the top prospects and most likely projected to be the first quarterbacks selected in the 2024 NFL Draft.
But I did want to break down the two prospects and to see who you feel is better?
Let’s start with Drake Maye the UNC gunslinger because he is the prototypical NFL quarterback. He stands at 6’4 and weighs 230 pounds, which is perfect when you are evaluating a quarterback. Maye has a very strong arm, with great accuracy, and the ability to get the ball out to his playmakers anywhere on the field. Whether he is in the pocket, under pressure, or on the move, Maye’s accuracy has stayed consistent over his two years as a starter.
He has a few flaws for sure too. He sometimes makes some bad decisions. He tries to take the game over and can force the ball into tight windows. He does struggle a bit with pre-snap reads, but if he ends up with a great offensive minded coach, he could end up tearing up the league. I was trying to compare his game to someone, and I think even though the kid is a beast, I think Justin Herbert is a fair comp for Maye.
When we talk about Caleb Williams though, he does not check all the boxes you want him too, especially when it comes to his size. Williams is just 6’1, he is a smaller quarterback, but man is he a playmaker. He has great vision and patience, elite arm talent, and can make any throw on the football field. Williams’ ability to throw the ball on the run and get out of danger was exceptional in college, but it needs to translate to the NFL. Very few quarterbacks have been able to do it, but if he is truly a generational talent, he’ll get there.
Height is not his only knock though, he is a very aggressive passer. He is going to be asked to play day 1 and if he is selected first overall, he is going to have a ton of pressure. You cannot pick the situation you land in. If he ends up on the Bears where his team is hoping he does not land, he does not have a choice as to the organization he is selected by. He is very similar to Patrick Mahomes, but comparing him to the best quarterback in the NFL is crazy. Do I feel he is a generational talent, the answer is yes, but he will have to work on some things. It will depend where he lands.
