Ronnie Caldwell was a junior safety at Northwestern State University in Louisiana and had a bright future. The standout safety was shot and killed in Louisiana on Thursday morning.

According to police reports, the 21-year-old football player was shot near the Northwestern State campus in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

Caldwell was shot multiple times, and was later pronounced dead. Police are still investigating the shooting.

Caldwell was a leader in the team’s locker room, and the coaches made the decision to cancel their game against Nicholls this weekend.

Caldwell played at Tyler Junior College before transferring to NSU. He finished last year seventh in tackles.
