Player Summary:
Transfer from BYU. First-year starter. Older prospect. Freshman season in 2018, then spent 2019 and 2020 on a mission trip before returning to BYU in 2021 for sophomore season. Missed most of the 2022 season with an ankle injury. Poor height and weight, yet good overall length and hand size for the position. Fairly filled out frame; doesn’t look like there is much room to add weight. Is used both as an in-line tight end and split out wide in the slot in Colorado State’s offensive scheme. Is an adequate blocker for his size. Has good speed and moves his feet well to stay in good position. Uses size advantage on outside well when blocking smaller defensive backs. Has enough strength and solid technique to be an effective second-level blocker on linebackers. Moves well in the open field. Has adequate speed and the ability to sink hips, bend at the waist, and duck defenders. Shows good catch technique; catches the ball with his hands well out in front of his body. Soft hands. Makes good use of head fakes and stutter steps at the top of his routes to freeze defenders and gain separation. Tracks the ball in the air well for a receiver of his size. Shows good concentration and ability to catch the ball over his shoulder. Does not have the weight to be a consistent in-line blocker at the next level. Will likely be used exclusively in the slot as a wide receiver or “Big Slot” rather than as a traditional tight end. Occasionally stops moving his feet when blocking, allowing quicker defenders to gain the advantage and get past him. Has a tendency to hesitate and can seem unsure of his blocking assignment. Is not strong enough to consistently block defensive linemen/edge rushers. Slow reaction time at the snap of the ball can put him in poor position both as a blocker and in getting open for his QB. Lacks a second gear to kick into the open field after catch.
Scheme Fit
Outside receiver; “Big Slot”
Power Statement:
Solid receiving tight end who can provide the quarterback with a big, reliable safety valve and occasionally stretch the field.
