Player Summary:

Fifth-year junior with a compact build, a well-built lower half, and a low center of gravity. A physical runner who absorbs contact well and flashes proficient contact balance & body control. Runs confidently behind his pads and keeps his lower half driving through contact. Sets up blocks well and presses gaps patiently. One-cut back with notable instincts, vision, and short-area quickness to attack open running lanes without hesitation. Has a versatile skill set to run the ball inside and outside the tackles. Sufficient initial quickness to beat defenders to the edge and disrupt gap responsibilities in the interior. Adequate burst/acceleration when he reaches the second level limits his ceiling as a playmaker with the ball in his hands. Most valuable as a pass catcher out of the backfield. Boasts strong hands and route-running ability; Proven to be a reliable outlet who can accumulate YAC in mass when matched up with linebackers in one-on-one situations. Willing blocker with active eyes and capable play strength to compete at the POA against interior DL and EDGE rushers. Breaks tackles with a tough, power-based running style, but displays insufficient elusiveness, twitch, and stop-start ability in the open field. Ball security can be suspect at times. Has split carries throughout his entire Utah career, so his ability to be a number-one feature back at the next level remains questionable.

Scheme Fit:

Third-down back in a spread-heavy scheme

Power Statement:

Bernard is a well-rounded running back with a durable frame, high-level toughness, dependable receiving ability, and solid overall play speed.
