Player Summary:
RT starter. Good height but appears to be overweight with a thick midsection. Average run blocker and below-average as a pass protector. As a run blocker, he is average. Can fire forward to the second level and block LB’s. Is a good puller who can move, run and hit a moving target. Has streaky hand placement in both phases of the game. Will allow his chest to get exposed and allows defenders to cross his face and penetrate. Doesn’t get much vertical push in short yardage/goal line situations. In pass protection, he is below-average. Plays with a wide base and can neutralize when his hand placement is right. Tends to open the gate, gets his shoulders turned, and gets bull-rushed back into the pocket too much though. Has a difficult time mirroring wide rushers with speed, notably against OHST. Bends at the waist instead of sitting on a stool and having power angles in his legs, will overextend and get turned. Susceptible to counter moves and misdirection from opposing DEs. Get-off is a little streaky – looked late off the snap vs. Ohio State. Could shed some fat and develop better foot speed. Struggling to see how he could handle NFL-level edge rushers, think his fit in the pros would require a transition to guard.
Scheme Fit:
OG.
Power Statement:
I think Karsen would be a better fit at guard where he doesn’t have to handle edge speed. He is a marginal run blocker and below-average in pass protection. A move to OG would be a better fit for him.
