Player Summary:
RS Senior from Lawrenceville, GA. Primarily plays MOF safety for Clemson, but comes down in the box to spy QBs frequently and occasionally plays some nickel. Effective blitzer as well. Lean, slender frame. Well-built uppers with some room to add muscle. Lowers are skinny and have room for development. High level length for his size. Adequate speed for the position, but has high level acceleration. Smooth, comfortable backpedal. Impressive start-stop ability. Able to stick with receivers in man and stay in phase. Shows some discomfort covering receivers with elite quickness and gets a little grabby in breaks. Plays with a commitment to scheme, does not allow receivers to pull him out of his zone and create gaps in the defense. Sometimes too committed to defending grass and needs to cheat towards where the receivers are. Breaks on the ball quickly and meets the receiver at the catch point, occasionally too early and interferes. Tracks the ball carrier well through traffic from the secondary as well as in the box. Takes good angles, does not take himself out of position. Willing to take on and fight through blockers in pursuit. Does not come with great pop, but slips blockers well. Solid tackler, breaks down and wraps well. Does not arrive with knockdown power, but consistently wraps and brings down ball carriers. Plays to the whistle, does not give up on plays. Best game – Tennessee, Worst game – FSU
Scheme Fit:
Projects as a versatile safety prospect that fits the traditional FS mold
Power Statement:
While he lacks elite size, Phillips is a well-rounded safety prospect with high level quickness and a commitment to solid tackling. He is an effective enough player now to be a two-deep player immediately, with the potential to develop into a starter by year 2 or 3. I would expect him to be a late day 2 pick in the 2024 draft.
