Player Summary:

RS Senior from Melbourne, FL. 4-year starter at Georgia Tech prior to transferring in January 2023. Primarily played LCB at GT. Lean, dense frame. Developed and filled out uppers, and smaller lowers. Skinny calves. Bubble butt. Outstanding height and length for his position, above the line speed. Twitchy, impressive quickness. Comfortable in man-press situations. Struggles to consistently protect his inside from receivers off the snap, but always disrupts the route. Good hand placement on jams. Smooth backpedal, plays with light feet. Excellent start-stop ability. Shows impressive patience in letting the route develop. Fluid transitions, runs routes with receivers. Impressive ability to stay in phase with NFL-level receivers. Borderline elite-level recovery speed. Stays on his assigned receiver to the end of the play, and does not bail on his responsibility early. Plays the receiver’s hands at the catch point. Tracks the ball like a receiver, soft hands. Quick trigger to break on underneath routes. Only allowed one catch in games scouted. Developed man coverage defender, but belowthe line run defender. Excellent quickness and bend help him get around blocks on screens but is not an asset as a tackler. Shies away from contact at the tackle point, and dives for ankles rather than watching the ball carrier’s hips and torso. Drops his head when he tackles to go low. Poor effort in pursuit when a ball carrier other than his man is in the open field, frequently loafs. Takes poor angles or chops his feet to take himself out of position on open-field runners. Refuses to make an open-field tackle. Frequently a liability in run support. Best game – UNC, worst game – UGA

Scheme Fit:

Projects as an outside corner to match up with #1 receivers, but his COD skills are strong enough that he could play nickel as needed

Power Statement:

Long, rangy corner with as much starting experience as any DB in college football; Walton has the size and speed to play outside but has the quickness to bump inside to nickel as needed. His effort in run support is a major detractor, but I still expect him to be a day 2 selection in the 2024 draft.
