Player Summary:
5th Year Senior. Starts at TE. Marginal height but is a good all-around TE prospect who has a legitimate chance. Good receiver, average pass protector, average run blocker. Really good as a receiver which should impress NFL teams. Shows good adjustment hi/low to the ball. Isn’t exceptionally quick or fast, but has good downfield burst to stretch the field vertically and get open over the MOF. Displays good situational awareness and knows where the ball is. Good run-after-the-catch, and flashes a strong stiff arm to ward off defenders and keep going downfield. Needs to work on being able to create separation downfield v. LBs. In pass protection, he is average. Although he struggles to latch at times, generally plays with a wide base and good inside hand placement. Will get jerked and knocked back on his toes. Allows defenders to cross his face inside instead of sealing off the corner. As a run blocker, he is average. Like his abilities in pass protection, has good inside hand placement. Is also a good puller who can quickly get out of his stance and find defenders to hit. Is oftentimes slow to reach 2nd level linebackers and needs to work on latching onto defenders and driving them off the ball. A good all-around prospect and one of the more fundamentally-sound players I’ve seen so far. Is trying to play the position right and it shows. Production shot up last year.
Scheme Fit:
TE.
Power Statement:
Mason is an average run blocker and pass protector; however, his strengths as a receiver add value to his NFL potential. He is also doing a good job of trying to play the position in a fundamentally-sound way.
