A recent high school graduate who was preparing to begin the next chapter of his life at Georgia State University was tragically killed in a shooting early Saturday morning.

Anthony Onochie, 18, of Columbus, Georgia, died after being shot during an overnight gathering in Lee County, Alabama, according to the Lee County Coroner’s Office.

Authorities said Lee County deputies responded to reports of a shooting around 1:30 a.m. CST on Saturday. Onochie was found with a gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Onochie had recently graduated from Northside High School, where he was a member of the football team. Friends, classmates, and coaches are mourning the loss of a young man who had his future ahead of him.

He was set to attend Georgia State University this fall, where he planned to continue his education and begin a new chapter in his life.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and authorities have not yet released additional information regarding potential suspects or what led to the incident.

As family, friends, and the Northside High School community grieve his untimely passing, Anthony Onochie is being remembered as a promising young man whose life was cut tragically short just weeks before beginning his college career.
