Player Summary:
A 6th-year senior who transferred from Tennessee in 2021. A 2-year starter who has played in 44 career games and has 14 starts under his belt. He has a big body with big arms. Displays good up field burst off LOS in 0 and 2 techniques, does a good job on leveraging position with good pad level vs OL. Has an aggressive bull rush that is effective and puts pressure on OL at POA forcing disruption in pocket. Has athletic ability to consistently play multiple gap techniques in run support, attracts double teams at LOS while freeing up gaps for DL to make plays in the backfield. Has a good motor, and hustles to the ball to make an impact on plays. Displays ability to move from gap to gap with ease, His change of direction, coupled with good hip fluidity allows him to finish plays and funnel runners back to defensive traffic. Does not consistently utilize hand placement inside of pads of OL with arm extension to control gap integrity, struggles keeping his head up with OL and to look in the backfield to control gap assignment. Unable to detach from combo blocks at LOS. Easily gets washed away from play instead of holding ground. Not consistent vs pass pro, struggles vs taller athletic OL, does not have same push/aggressiveness when engaging average OL. Struggles to finish tackles in backfield, lunges too often instead of coming to balance and sinking hips at point of attack when engaging runners. Not much UOH at LOS post snap, does not display much play strength as game goes on. His technique suffers and contributes to lack of initial explosion off back foot to help get in position to construct run lanes.
Scheme Fit:
4-3 Defense playing in 0,1,2, 2i and 3 techniques as a disruptive defensive tackle.
Power Statement:
A versatile defensive tackle who has the ability to constrict run lanes and has an effective bull rush to penetrate the backfield to limit run production and pass pro.
Assistant Director of Scouting for the Hula Bowl and long-time writer for NFL Draft Diamonds.
